Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) recently recognized Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) as a winner in two categories of its 2007 Concessions Contest. RSW was awarded 1st Place-Medium Airport, in the Best Convenience Retail Program Category, and 2nd Place-Medium Airport, in the Best Food and Beverage Program Category.
The Best Convenience Retail Program in North America honors a single terminal or concourse for its mix, quality, brands, sales and build-out of its convenience retail offerings, such as newsstands, drugstores, pharmacies and convenience stores. Judges commented on RSW’s entry, "Southwest Florida International sought to have convenience retail concessions that were ‘well done’ rather than ‘overdone’ and ones that reflected the relaxed and tropical charm of the region. This was achieved by balancing the national brand ‘CNBC News’ with local brands like ‘Coastal News and Beaches Travelmart’ and ‘Book and Sanibel Bean’ which features home grown coffee and convenience items. Convenience retail is available in both pre- and post- security locations to capture passengers and well wishers."
The Best Food and Beverage Program in North America category honors a single terminal or concourse for its mix, quality, brands, sales and build-out of the food service offerings included. Judges said of RSW’s entry, "By using "intuitive wayfinding" during the development of the new terminal complex, Southwest Florida International Airport was able to incorporate food service strategically throughout the terminal to maximize exposure and capitalize on passenger flow patterns. Each prime passenger traffic area offers at least one non-alcoholic beverage option, a bar area, a sit-down casual dining venue, and a fast food option. Their planning paid off - resulting in annual sales of $19 million and a 38% increase in sales per enplanement."
Twenty other airports were recognized for their superior concessions programs. The top honors went to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, which won the Overall Griesbach Award of Excellence, honoring an airport’s entire concessions program including food service, retail and consumer services. Also, for the first time ACI-NA recognized a Concessions "Person of the Year," Susan Stiene, Director, Retail & Passenger Services, Vancouver International Airport.
The announcement was made during the ACI-NA Airport Concessions Conference in Chicago, at which representatives from the entire North American airport concessions industry are in attendance. This annual conference brings together airport management and concessions professionals to examine the trends and best practices in airport retail planning, goal setting, and key operational and management issues.
Entries for this year’s contest were judged by an independent panel comprised of high-level professionals from each of the various disciplines reflected in the contest (i.e. food and beverage, retail mall development, consumer groups, architecture and academic communities). In addition to the independent panel a minimum of one representative from the previous years’ overall winner is also involved in the judging process.
The contest received over 125 entries from airports of all sizes throughout the U.S. and Canada. This year’s winners include:

The first-ever integrated passenger-baggage reconciliation system to go live at an Indian airport will be deployed by SITA in time for the March 2008 opening of the new green field airport project in Bangalore, India’s "Silicon Valley".
Marcel Hungerbuehler, Chief Operation Officer, Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), said: "Given our location in the home of India’s formidable IT industry, it is entirely appropriate that this world class airport should take advantage of the latest technology which SITA is providing to ensure an operationally efficient, secure and passenger-friendly airport."
The new Bangalore International Airport is expected to be operational on March 30, 2008 and will handle an estimated 10 million passengers in the first year of operation.
SITA, which tracks baggage in 220 countries and territories, has developed an integrated, end-to-end baggage reconciliation system which combines bar codes, Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and highly redundant IP-based global connectivity to ensure baggage gets to its destination on time.
Elyes M’Rad, Regional Vice President, SITA, said: "This is a significant milestone for the air transport industry in India and will set a benchmark for the future development of airports. Passenger-bag reconciliation reduces aircraft delays through quicker off-loading in case of passenger no-shows and automatically redirects bags that missed their connection onto alternative flights."
Further explaining the advantages, Marcel Hungerbuehler added: "Nothing is more frustrating than being separated from your bags and we intend to reduce this risk to the minimum possible through the deployment of state of the art technology which will give airlines and passengers maximum visibility on baggage movements through the airport."
The SITA system in Bangalore comprises two modules, BagManager and BagMessage.
SITA’s BagManager interfaces with check-in and baggage sortation systems, and integrates with flight information systems for any latest updates on aircraft loading. BagManager can also be linked to airport based high-tech security systems to verify the screening of bags by explosive detection systems and other devices. The system provides positive passenger bag match and reconciles passengers with bags thereby conforming to ICAO’s Annex 17-security requirement prohibiting the carriage of accompanied baggage. It reduces substantially the cost for airlines and airports towards misdirected baggage.
SITA’s BagMessage ensures the latest information about passenger bags is available whenever and wherever needed. During the course of last year, BagMessage delivered 650 million messages between airline departure control systems and automated baggage systems.
In addition, almost all airlines using Bangalore International Airport are customers of SITA’s WorldTracer, co-sponsored by IATA, which provides a single shared database of lost and mishandled bags which delivers world round-the-clock baggage tracing for some 400 airlines and other users.

The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, Jim Fitzpatrick, joined officials from Birmingham International Airport (BIA) and the region’s transport leaders to celebrate the launch of the Airport’s new ‘Airport Master Plan’ and ‘Surface Access Strategy’, which form a blueprint for BIA’s future, up to 2030.
The new Airport Master Plan ‘Towards 2030: Planning A Sustainable Future for Air Transport in the Midlands’, outlines how BIA can grow sustainably whilst meeting the regional demand for air travel over the next 23 years. The Airport Surface Access Strategy entitled ‘Moving Together’ recognises the importance of surface access to the Airport, set within the context of a sustainable approach, and gives new targets, over a shorter period, up to the year 2012.
During his visit, the Minister unveiled two plaques at Birmingham International Interchange to highlight the Airport’s public transport success to date and to announce a new target for it to achieve 25% of all people travelling to BIA by public transport by 2012.
The Minister, said, "I'm very pleased to see Birmingham Airport setting a bold but achievable target to get more air passengers to use public transport to the airport. The Government wants an aviation industry which meets its own environmental costs and this initiative supports that vision.
"As one of the region’s largest employers, Birmingham Airport will have an increasingly important role in supporting prosperity and providing the international links and surface access opportunities that are so important to modern business and society. However this can only be achieved through partnership so I urge the region’s transport leaders to work with the Airport to realise this vision for a truly integrated transport system."
The release of these two important Airport documents follows a lengthy Master Plan review process, which included consultations and research on the effects of Airport development. BIA has taken on board many of the views and comments expressed by consultees, and believes that it has undertaken one of the longest and most transparent series of consultations of any UK Airport.
The new Master Plan supports the Airport’s planning application to extend the existing runway, which is expected to be submitted before the end of the year. The proposed 405 metre extension would accommodate larger aircraft and provide opportunities for more long haul routes and services for the region’s business and leisure travellers. The Airport has been consulting on this proposal during November and responses will form part of the planning application to Solihull MBC.
The Airport’s Acting Managing Director, Joe Kelly commented: "Anyone local to the Airport will know that over the last four years, we have been the focus of much debate about our long-term future. The publication of our Master Plan now offers our neighbours and the region’s business community a clearer outline on what our aspirations are. The Master Plan also clarifies how those aspirations can be achieved responsibly by working together to deliver the Airport for the benefit of our passengers and the wider region."
The Minister’s unveiling was attended by the region’s transport leaders representing National Express, Virgin Trains, London Midland, Centro and CrossCountry, plus representatives from the local authorities and Birmingham International Airport.

Passengers throughout Northeast Ohio are continuing to discover why the Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) is a better way to go, and it shows.
Almost 130,000 travelers used CAK in October 2007; a 13 percent increase compared to the same month last year when nearly 115,000 travelers passed through. The previous record for October was in 2005 when 122,000 passengers used CAK.
"Thank you Northeast Ohio for making this our best October on record," said Fred Krum, airport director. "Customers from throughout the region find our low fares and low stress experience are worth a bit longer drive to get here. And, we will save you, on average, 30 minutes once you arrive with our close parking and shorter lines. Low fares and low stress make Akron-Canton Airport, a better way to go."
Every airline carrier at Akron-Canton Airport saw an increase in passenger traffic in October including AirTran Airways and Frontier Airlines; with an 8 percent and 20 percent increase in passengers respectively. AirTran Airways moved more than 58,000 passengers in October. The low cost juggernaut also added non-stop service to Las Vegas (its seventh non-stop destination) from CAK in August. Frontier Airlines was voted the Best Low Cost Carrier in the U.S. by the readers of "Business Travelers Magazine" for 2007. Delta Connection, United Express, Northwest Airlink, and US Airways Express all recorded double digit gains.

Once again, Czech ANS, the Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) of the Czech Republic, is leading the way in the adoption of next generation surveillance solutions. And once again, it is Era technology that is supporting these initiatives.
ARTAS is a multi-sensor surveillance tracker developed by Eurocontrol and supported by Comsoft GmbH of Germany. It is increasingly seen as the "best of breed" tracking solution and a solution that is independent of both surveillance sources and of the adopted ATM automation solution. In recognition of the rapid adoption of next generation surveillance technologies, ARTAS already supports ADS-B (ASTERIX 21) data and Eurocontrol has commissioned Comsoft to enhance ARTAS to support Multilateration (ASTERIX 20), so that both technologies can be rapidly absorbed into existing ATM automation systems.
Comsoft plans to deliver the multilateration interface in 2008/9; however, Czech ANS and Era have accelerated this process by adapting the multilateration data from the operational systems in the Czech Republic to output ADS-B-like information so that all aircraft can be tracked through ARTAS, independent of whether they are currently equipped with certified and operational ADS-B avionics.
"We are very happy with the support and progress being made by Comsoft and Eurocontrol in supporting these next generation technologies, which are already such an integral part of the Czech ANS infrastructure," said Ivan Uhlir, Surveillance Manager for Czech ANS. "The new Era interface allows us to accelerate the process by integrating multilateration data into a single stream, and serves to move the process along faster during this period when ADS-B equipage is variable."
Russell Hulstrom, Era’s VP and GM for ATM Solutions, said, "We are very happy to be working with Czech ANS on this initiative, which we think is a fundamental and important step forward in the transition to a world ‘Beyond Radar.’ In 2007, we have seen a tremendous escalation in the rate of adoption of wide area multilateration as a radar-alternative, both in its own right and as a rational path towards a future ADS-B surveillance strategy." Hulstrom further said, "Established Era wide area surveillance customers, such as Czech ANS, AENA, ATNS, ARMATS and others, are now looking to Era for sophisticated support in integrating these technologies into operational systems, and we at Era are very happy to work with these customers to continue to innovate these next generation solutions."
Czech ANS also confirmed last week that it was to provide the test data and platform for the development of the final multilateration interface to ARTAS in 2008. "We look forward to providing Comsoft with all possible support in this endeavour," said Mr Uhlir. "With many years of operational experience with multilateration surveillance, we are sure we can help out on this very important Eurocontrol initiative."

Opening in March 2008, Terminal 5 will offer travellers over 7,000 parking spaces within three new three car parks. Incorporating the latest in car park design and technology, the new facilities aim to take the guesswork out of parking at the airport and deliver new and elevated levels of product quality and service to help passengers arrive at the terminal relaxed and stress free.
The new car parks reflect the desire by passengers to be as close to the terminal as possible, with a brand new 3,800 space Short Stay car park located within walking distance of check-in. To complement this, there will be a Valet Parking service offering the ultimate convenience of car drop-off on the terminal forecourt and pick-up from just outside the arrivals area. Further choice will be provided by Business Parking and a Long Stay car park, both a short distance from the terminal and served by frequent courtesy coaches.
Technology will play a pivotal role in the new car parks at Terminal 5, most notably within the multi-storey Short Stay car park. This technology will provide innovative, intuitive and time-saving solutions to the traveller and for the first time will combine all the latest developments in a single location.
The many advances, designed to make parking as ‘stress-free’ as possible, include ‘Bay Monitoring’ together with a new Variable Messaging System (VMS). Bay Monitoring will enable drivers to reach an empty space in the optimum time and most energy efficient way. Each space will be fitted with a sensor-led system and a green light above the bay indicates where a space is available. VMS minimises queuing and congestion by delivering electronic messages in the form of arrows to direct customers around the car park. In addition, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) will be used to ensure a swift and efficient entry/exit to the car parks for those customers who have pre-booked.
On their return to the Short Stay car park, an additional feature has been designed to assist customers in locating their vehicles. "Car Finder" will track cars to a specific zone using number plate recognition and closed circuit television (CCTV) within the car park. Customers will be able to use their ticket, or enter their registration number, at a specially designed Car Finder kiosk, which will identify the location of their parked car.
Hugh Fenn, Travel Services Director, says "The new developments at Terminal 5 are a sign of the changing needs of 21st Century traveller. We hope that through increased numbers of spaces and the use of revolutionary technological advances, our airports can cater for every type of traveller providing the most simple and stress-free experience as possible."
As part of the T5 construction programme, bus, coach, train and underground links have been improved and a new road junction will connect T5 directly with the M25. All intended to make the journey to T5 from central London as smooth and as efficient as possible.

A new executive lounge opened today for passengers travelling through the North Terminal at Gatwick.
The new facility, named the Aviance Lounge and operated by Aviance, part of the Go-Ahead plc group, is situated on the first floor in the departure lounge and has been developed for passengers as an alternative relaxation area to the main departure lounge, as well as an area to work in prior to boarding a flight.
The newly refurbished lounge has doubled in size from the previous Aviance facility and now covers 4000 square feet. The lounge has undergone a complete refit including new ceilings, lighting, toilets and furniture and provides seating and access to computer work stations for up to 130 people, with access to Wi-fi at a small additional charge.
For passengers who simply wish to relax there is a bar and coffee area providing refreshments and snacks throughout the day, together with daily newspapers, magazines and television screens.
Any departing passenger will be able to enjoy the new facility with access provided by Aviance airline business partners, or ‘pay-on-the-door’ at the lounge reception for as little at twenty pounds.
Marking the opening of the lounge Arthur Dodgson, CEO, Go-Ahead Aviation Division said: "Operating an executive lounge has been a key part of our business for over 30 years. They are a great alternative to the main airport departure lounge for passengers who simply want to relax or work prior to boarding a flight.
"We believe that the addition of the Aviance lounge in the North Terminal at Gatwick is a world class facility for a world class airport."
Emma Rees, Head of Property, BAA Gatwick added: "We're absolutely delighted Aviance has developed such a great facility for passengers travelling through the North Terminal. It’s a great addition to what's already on offer and provides passengers with real choice, whether they wish to enjoy the wide range of shops and restaurants available in the main departure lounge, or simply unwind before their board their aircraft."

BAA Glasgow is to invest more than £500,000 to improve drop off facilities at Glasgow Airport in the wake of this year’s failed attack.
Work is about to begin on a project to widen the drop-off zone on St Andrew’s Drive to increase capacity, install new shelters along St Andrew’s Drive and build a covered walkway to the main terminal. The area will also be re-surfaced to allow easy access for trolleys.
New processes for passenger pick up are also being considered, including improved facilities for disabled passengers. Currently, 'blue badge' holders can pick-up or drop-off in car park 2, directly opposite the terminal, with up to 30 minutes free access.
The investment brings the total cost of the attack to BAA to more than £2 million.
Gordon Dewar said: "We believe that the improvements we are making represent a balanced and proportionate response that combines tougher security measures with safe and secure access for passengers.
"We are grateful to our passengers for the patience and understanding they have shown over the past few months. Our first priority, following the attack, was to safeguard the safety and security of our passengers. In doing so, we inevitably had to compromise on some aspects of customer service, and we appreciate that the facilities currently in place along St Andrew’s Drive are not up to the standard we would like.
"This is inevitable given that the area was never originally designed as a drop off zone.
"However, over the course of the next few weeks, we will be working flat out to improve facilities for passengers using St Andrew's Drive for drop-off. At the same time, we are looking at ways to improve the passenger pick-up experience.
"Our aim is to provide as safe and convenient a service as possible within the context of the new security constraints we now face."
BAA Scotland’s communication team received a Gold Award from the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) for its handling of the failed attack on Glasgow Airport. The award was presented at last Friday’s CIPR PRide Awards in Glasgow.

Details of a new Stansted Airport Employment and Skills Academy were unveiled at the annual Employment Forum to gathered representatives of airport employers, employee representatives, local councils and educational providers.
The project, to which BAA Stansted will invest £200,000 across the next four years, brings about a unique partnership between Urban Futures and unionlearn, the TUC’s learning and skills organisation, to provide a centralised recruitment function for employers and employees at Stansted and a training centre dedicated solely to helping workers develop skills for future career progression.
BAA will also manage its highly successful Airport Skills Training Programme from the academy - a programme hailed by the then Chancellor Gordon Brown as ‘best practice’ in last year’s budget statement, and one that aims to equip the unemployed with basic skills training to help them obtain employment at the airport.
"With around 11,600 people currently working at Stansted Airport we are the largest single site employer in the East of England," said Murray Thomas, human resources director BAA Stansted.
"Stansted is a key facilitator for economic growth in the region and our strategy remains firmly focussed on partnership working with employers, employee representatives, local authorities and educational providers to support both our existing and future workforces.
"We’re very excited to be supporting Urban Futures and unionlearn with this new and exciting scheme and look forward to developing this further with them."
George Kieffer, Deputy Chair of the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) was present for today’s announcement and said:
"Skills are key to the economic prosperity of the East of England and the UK in an increasingly global economy and research shows that in our Region skills and employability are a particular challenge.
"EEDA has supported Skills Academies and Higher Education institutions throughout the Region, including the University Campus Suffolk in Ipswich as a major funder. We welcome this initiative by BAA, Urban Futures and unionlearn to develop and enhance the skills of the employee pool for the airport and businesses in the vicinity."
Addressing today’s forum, Phil Young of Urban Futures said: "The Academy will provide a framework for all elements of recruitment, training and skills support at Stansted Airport. Its physical presence at the airport will provide an easy gateway for employers to access the support on offer, and for individuals to access employment opportunities."
Barry Francis, regional manager unionlearn with the Southern and Eastern Region commented: "unionlearn is pleased to work with the LSC, GoSkills, BAA and affiliate unions including Unison, Unite and the GMB at Stansted Airport. Through these excellent partnerships we have been able to work to each others' strengths and co-ordinate a structured approach to learning and skills at Stansted. This has really enabled learning to take off at Stansted and benefit a range of staff. unionlearn has chaired and coordinated the activities of a steering group and we look forward to seeing the strategy, which seeks to open more learning centres, implemented."

On 26th of November, Zurich’s electorate voted clearly in favour of the more moderate of the two airport initiatives. By rejecting the unrealistic initiative that called for a ceiling on flight movements and a lengthier night-time curfew, the electorate has acknowledged the major economic importance of the airport, both for the canton and for the country as a whole. This result means that Zurich Airport can continue to develop in line with future mobility requirements.
Thanks to this outcome, future debate will no longer only focus on the number of flight movements per se, but also on those people who are exposed to aircraft noise. It is now essential that the federal government and relevant authorities of the canton of Zurich incorporate the development of area planning in the region of the airport into the federal government’s Civil Aviation Infrastructure Plan (SIL). This is the only way to ensure that the number of people exposed to aircraft noise does not continually rise, even without an increase in the number of flight movements.

The Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa offered China the concession of the Manta airport base. The air base is currently being used by the US armed forces for military operations, but their contract for the base will conclude in 2009, and will not be renewed. The air base functions in one building, but shares the airport runway with the city's Eloy Alfaro international airport terminal, which operates in a separate building. The airbase would handle air cargo, while the international airport terminal serving passengers will be offered under concession to a different firm.
The government of Ecuador plans to have Manta become the "doorway" for China to Latin America.

During the summit, issues like the strategies for developing airport’s retailing, the trend of airport retail business, and opportunities of future development were discussed.
The global airport retailing market is one of the fastest growing niches of world retail. Following three years of double-digit growth, between 2003 and 2006, the market has grown to be worth an estimated $24bn in 2006. For China, the airport retailing market is also facing great opportunities.
Wang Jian, Secretary General of China Civil Airports Association (CCAA) expressed that, nowadays, the competition between airports is no longer about capacity and price, but creativity, imaginary and the ability to set an example for the other airports. In the future, the customers will require the airports to not only meet their basic needs, but to bring them the so called "sense of experience" and "sense of fashion".This is not only the requirement for the current airport retailing, but, to a certain extend ,a key element used to measure the service equality & planning ability for a specific airport. Considering the current gap between airport’s retailing in China and the one in first class airports overseas, CCAA hosted this summit to help our national airports to broaden their eyes, and to share the advanced experiences of the international airports on retailing management .CCAA endeavors to make China airports to bring more attention to the retailing market and to make it more profitable by leading a creative concept & modal of management and keeping updated.
200 delegates attended this summit, including 30 CCAA members and retail operators, architects, designers, consultants, analysts, F&B operators, currency converters, potential vendors, solution providers, and duty-free operators etc. This summit was greatly supported by General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (CAAC). There were many terrific speeches presented, such as: Liu Shaocheng, Director of policy research, General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (CAAC) on "Brief introducing on the current status and prospects of airport retail in China". Qian Liqin, Chairman, Capital airport commercial & trading company ,on "The new retail opportunites of terminal 3".Cai Chaolin, Deputy general manager, Guangzhou baiyun international airport,on "The role of commercial activities in an airport’s operation". The Q&A section created a positive atmosphere and the very goal of hosting this kind of summit is to make a platform for the communication between the speakers and delegates. CCAA will host the 2nd China Airport Retail Summit in Nov. 2008. We are looking forward to seeing more friends, domestically or overseas, to come. Let’s work together for the developing of China airport retail.

Meinl Airports International Ltd. (MAI) will acquire a strategic stake of initially 10.1% in one of the world’s leading airports operators, the Turkish based TAV Havalimanlari Holding A.S. ("TAV Airports" or "TAV"). The participation is underlined by a seat in TAV’s board.
TAV has the right to operate 7 airports in the region, including Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport, one of Europe’s largest airports. TAV handles a total of more than 30 million passengers annually and total revenues in 2006 exceeded EUR 400 million. MAI is initially investing a total of around EUR 190 million, and taking the next decisive step in its expansion.
TAV’s President and CEO, Dr. M. Sani Sener welcomes the investment by MAI: "We are extremely pleased to have a strategic partner as Meinl Airports, with acknowledged international airports' expertise. With one airport in Russia and plans for massive expansion in Eastern Europe, Meinl Airports is a partner of significant strategic importance, particularly in the light of TAV's planned future growth in the region. We are in a position to make the best possible use of the available synergies."
MAI will buy 10.1% of TAV, with a possibility to acquire a further 4% - further increase intended
MAI’s participation in TAV is initially 10.1%, with a total investment of approximately EUR 190 million. MAI gets also a possibility to acquire a further 4% in TAV. Roman Himmler, Chairman of Meinl Airport Managers Ltd: "The stake in TAV is a major step for the future development of MAI. In a single move, we get access to 7 airports in our target region Central and Eastern Europe and other aviation growth markets. We can envisage accumulating a larger strategic position in TAV further. Through the strategic cooperation agreement with TAV, MAI is acting as a strategic investor, takes initially one seat on TAV’s board and will thereby influence the strategic decisions in TAV." MAI and TAV also are open to realise new projects jointly as co-developers and co-investors in the future.
Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport - TAV’s flagship, with 21 million passengers in 2006
TAV’s flagship airport - and now MAI’s as well - is Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport. In 2006 it handled 21 million passengers, making Atatürk one of Europe’s busiest airports. Double-digit passenger growth is expected in coming years: Deutsche Bank’s equity research report estimated that passenger numbers would reach 37 million in 2010.
Ankara und Izmir - 2 further major Turkish airports with strong business growth
TAV is also the operator of two other Turkish airports - in Ankara (4.5 million passengers in 2006) and Izmir (1.5 million passengers in 2006). Deutsche Bank also predicts strong dynamic passenger growth for these airports in the coming years.
Tunisia and Georgia - markets of the future
In Georgia, TAV owns a 60% stake in the airports of Tbilisi and Batumi with an operating concession until at least 2027. The new Tbilisi airport, with a total capacity of 2.8 million passengers per annum, commenced operations in February 2007. Batumi Airport, with an annual passenger capacity of 562,500 per annum, started operations at the end of May 2007.
In 2007 TAV Airports also received the concession for development and operation of two Tunisian airports, with operating licences for 40 years. Operations in Monastir are scheduled to begin in 2008, and completion of Enfidha is planned for 2009. More than 5 million passengers for the two airports together are expected already in 2009, and in the long term passenger numbers in excess of ten million are envisaged.
Impressive revenues from non-aviation business
TAV also generates considerable direct revenues from non-aviation businesses amounting in 2006 to approximately EUR 240 million. The most important contributions come from the 50% stake in ATU, which operates the duty-free zones in TAV airports. TAV also has a number of subsidiaries with revenues from ground handling, catering, security and other airport related services.
Nadine Gilles, Member of the Board of Meinl Airport Managers, sums up: "MAI has achieved a substantial stake in one of Europe’s most recognised and biggest airport companies. The fantasy of this participation lies in the regional coverage in the growth markets from Russia to Turkey and further on across the Middle East into the North African rim."

The Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) plans to invest €435m or well over €1m per day during 2008 on its Transformation Programme for Dublin Airport, according to DAA Chairman, Gary McGann.
Speaking before An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, T.D., officially opened the Airport’s new Pier D boarding gate facility, Mr McGann said the DAA was well on its way to expanding, improving and modernising Dublin Airport for passengers and other customers.
"Pier D has just opened, on time and on budget and customers can now look forward to a similar quality airport travel experience, though on a greater scale, when the new passenger terminal and related facilities come on stream in just two and half years’ time," he said.
Construction of the new terminal (T2) began on Oct 1 and is scheduled for completion before the end of 2009. Following a subsequent intensive commissioning, testing and training period, T2 will open to the travelling public in April 2010. The 75,000sq m terminal and related facilities will cost €610m.
An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, T.D., said: "Dublin Airport is the fastest growing major airport in Europe and one of the busiest - with annual passenger numbers having doubled to more than 20 million over the past decade, and set to increase to 30 million by the middle of the next decade.
"The huge increase in passenger numbers has, of course, put a great deal of pressure on the facilities at the airport, especially during the very busy summer months. That is why the Dublin Airport Authority is investing €2 billion over the next decade to radically improve the passenger experience here."
"It is vital that we do everything possible to ensure that Dublin Airport is fit for purpose. I am delighted to see the scale of development that is happening here and commend the Dublin Airport Authority for their vigour in driving forward their capital development programme. I would like to congratulate everyone involved in the construction of this magnificent new facility."
Speaking at the event, Minister Dempsey said: "I welcome the opening of Pier D as a significant milestone in the delivery of the Government’s Aviation Action Plan for Dublin Airport and the upgrading of the country’s overall transport infrastructure."
Mr McGann thanked Dublin Airport’s passengers and other customers for their patience over recent years when the scale and quality of facilities failed to match the pace of aviation traffic growth.
"I hope Pier D provides some recompense for the challenges of the past and whets passengers’ appetites for the even greater benefits coming down the line," he added.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) called for greater transparency in the Latin American airline industry to form a sounder basis for key policy decisions.
"We must be open and honest about the economic and social benefits that we bring; and about the policy issues that we face. Facts and figures demonstrate policy failures of the past - including failed airport privatisations," said Giovanni Bisignani, CEO and Director General of IATA.
IATA partnered with the Latin American Civil Aviation Commission (CLAC) to release a series of new economic studies during the annual general meeting of the Latin American Air Transport Association (ALTA) focused on five countries: Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Panama.
In Latin America, airlines support 2.7 million jobs and US$157 billion in related business. "By explaining ourselves better we can help governments avoid policy myopia so that together we can build an even stronger base for future growth," said Bisignani.
Bisignani urged attendees to work hard in four important areas:
* Safety: "Latin America’s accident rate is higher than the global average with one accident for every 550,000 flights. This is a serious problem and it must change," said Bisignani. The IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) is at the forefront of IATA’s comprehensive efforts to improve safety. Chile was the first government to incorporate IOSA into its national safety oversight programme. In September, Costa Rica confirmed its use of IOSA and Mexico announced that it would do the same at the ALTA conference. "These moves by governments will help improve safety in the region. And I encourage all other Latin American governments to quickly follow-up," said Bisignani. Currently 177 carriers are on the IOSA registry, which is transparent for all to see at www.iata.org/registry.
* Infrastructure: Airlines pay at least US$2.5 billion to airport and air traffic management (ATM) infrastructure providers in Latin America. "In too many places running an airport or ATM monopoly is a license to print money. The biggest problem is the airport concession-fee structure instituted at the time of airport privatisations. It guarantees profits with no incentive to invest in efficiency or better facilities. Governments across Latin America must understand that infrastructure monopolies are not cash cows. To get the greatest economic benefit from aviation we need transparent policies that result in efficient infrastructure," said Bisignani.
* Liberalisation: "Bilateral agreements cannot keep pace with market developments and they prevent the consolidation needed to build strong global competitors. Latin America is just 5% of global traffic divided into 39 markets. Maintaining the status quo is a one-way ticket to remain regional players in a global industry. Governments must move forward with progressive liberalisation so that policy catches-up with business reality," said BIsignani.
* Environment: "In 2006 IATA’s fuel programme saved 6 million tonnes of CO2 by shortening 350 air routes. Latin America has benefited from 7 RNAV (area navigation) routes, which will save 24,000 tonnes of CO2 and US$6.9 million in fuel costs. A re-design of flight procedures at Mexico City will save nearly 300,000 tonnes of CO2 and US$53 million annually. This is good news for business and good news for the environment," said Bisignani. "By being transparent about our achievements and the technical solutions that could improve our performance, Latin America has an opportunity to shape its approach to the environment around practical measures that improve performance," said Bisignani.

The Northern Winter season, which commenced on 28 October 2007, has seen Singapore Changi Airport setting an all new record high of 4,300 weekly scheduled flights. This is an increase of more than 100 weekly flights compared to the Northern Summer season from 25 March 2007 to 27 October 2007.
Mr Lim Kim Choon, Director-General & Chief Operating Officer, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), said, "Leading this growth is increases in flights to South Asia and North Asia, in particular the Indian sub-continent. This is not surprising, given that India and China are Singapore's fastest growing markets for business and tourism." For the first eight months of this year, passenger movements between Singapore and these two countries experienced year-on-year growth of 17.5% for India and 11.3% for China.
This Northern Winter season sees more flights from Singapore operating to three cities in India: Chennai, Bangalore and Cochin. There are also more flights added to Shanghai, Hangzhou and Fuzhou in China. In addition, there are two new destinations in Changi's air network - Coimbatore in India and Kathmandu in Nepal. Another region with new flights from Singapore is Oceania, with additional flights to Perth, Brisbane and Auckland
The air cargo industry also benefits from new cargo flights launched by United Parcel Services Co, Shanghai Airlines Cargo International, Asiana Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, EVA Airways Corporation and Singapore's new home-grown carrier, Jett8 Airlines Cargo. Leipzig in Germany has also been added to Changi's growing network of cities served by pure-cargo flights.
Mr Lim added, "The introduction of new passenger and cargo flights reaffirm Changi Airport's status as a vibrant international air hub. It is also a reflection of the airline industry's confidence in Singapore's growth potential for both passenger and cargo traffic."
There are now 83 airlines connecting Singapore to 189 cities in 60 countries.
